Program Notes
These three movements are adapted from three poems of Victor Hugo’s Les Contemplations. The Collection constitutes a tale of two halves, Autrefois and Aujourd'hui, where the poet reflects on various matters through a vast period of his life. One theme although, constitues a through line: the death of his daughter Léopoldine, which marks the separation between the two parts. The three movements are meant to represent the state of mind of the poet at three moments fixed in time, illustrating a path he might have walked so long ago. Hugo says it himself: when he speaks of him, he speaks of us. By giving him a voice once again through music, I can only hope that his message stays the same—but I surely speak of me as well.
